Cancel Your Budget App Subscription

Step-by-step instructions for canceling YNAB, Rocket Money, and Monarch — plus how to move your budgeting to LazeeFish for free.

💡
You don't have to pay for envelope budgeting

LazeeFish is a full-featured envelope budgeting app with Plaid bank sync, auto-tagging, savings goals, recurring bills, and joint budgeting — all at $0. The free plan is not a trial. It does not expire.

How to cancel YNAB

YNAB charges $14.99/month or $109/year. Canceling is done through their web app — there is no option to cancel from the mobile app.

  1. Export your data first. In YNAB, go to your Budget name (top-left) → Budget Settings → Export Budget. This downloads a ZIP with CSV files of all your transactions. Save this before you cancel.
  2. Open Account Settings. In the YNAB web app, click your name or initials in the top-right corner → Account Settings.
  3. Cancel your subscription. Under the "Subscription" section, click Cancel Subscription. YNAB will try to offer a discount or pause — skip past if you're done.
  4. Confirm cancellation. Click through the confirmation prompts. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.
If you subscribed via iOS or Android: YNAB subscriptions purchased through the App Store or Google Play are managed by Apple/Google, not YNAB. Cancel through iPhone Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, or Android Settings → Google Play → Subscriptions.
Switching from YNAB to LazeeFish:
  1. Create a free LazeeFish account — takes about 90 seconds.
  2. Connect your bank via Plaid (the same way YNAB does it).
  3. Create envelopes that match your YNAB categories. LazeeFish will start pulling in your transactions automatically.
  4. Set up your Monthly Budget allocations — define how much goes into each envelope per month, then apply it in one click at month start.

Your historical data stays in YNAB until your subscription ends. LazeeFish starts fresh from your bank connection date — no data import needed.

How to cancel Rocket Money

Rocket Money (formerly Truebill) charges $4–$12/month depending on the plan you chose. Note: Rocket Money designed their cancellation flow to be non-obvious — you can only cancel through the mobile app, not the web app.

  1. Open the Rocket Money mobile app (iOS or Android). The web app does not have a cancel option.
  2. Go to Profile. Tap the person icon or your initials in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Tap "Premium Membership." This is in the Account section.
  4. Tap "Cancel Premium." Scroll down until you see this option. Rocket Money will show retention offers — you can skip these.
  5. Confirm cancellation. Your premium access continues until the end of the billing period.
Can't find the cancel button? This is a known issue. If the in-app flow doesn't work, email support@rocketmoney.com with your account email and request cancellation directly. Federal law requires them to honor this.
What LazeeFish replaces from Rocket Money:
  • Subscription auto-detection — LazeeFish scans your bank transactions for recurring charges, same as Rocket Money, at $0.
  • Bank sync via Plaid — same underlying technology as Rocket Money uses.
  • Spending reports and monthly summaries.
  • Envelope budgeting — LazeeFish goes much deeper here than Rocket Money's basic category caps.

What LazeeFish doesn't replace: The subscription cancellation concierge (calling on your behalf) and bill negotiation services. If you use those heavily, you'll need to cancel subscriptions manually going forward — or handle negotiations directly.

How to cancel Monarch Money

Monarch charges $14.99/month or $99.99/year. Cancellation is done through their web app.

  1. Log in at monarchmoney.com.
  2. Open Settings. Click your name or the gear icon in the top-right.
  3. Go to Subscription. Under Account Settings, find the Subscription tab.
  4. Click "Cancel Plan." Follow the confirmation prompts. You'll keep access until the billing period ends.
Switching from Monarch to LazeeFish:

Monarch focuses on net worth tracking and cash flow analysis. LazeeFish focuses on envelope budgeting — you actively allocate your money into categories before spending, rather than just categorizing after the fact. If that proactive approach is what you want, LazeeFish is free and takes about 5 minutes to set up.

Before you cancel: export your data

Most budgeting apps let you export your transaction history as a CSV. It's worth doing before you cancel, even if you never look at it — it's your financial data and you should have a copy.

  • YNAB: Budget Settings → Export Budget (exports ZIP with CSVs)
  • Rocket Money: Settings → Export Data (exports transaction CSV)
  • Monarch: Settings → Data → Export Transactions

LazeeFish has a CSV import tool — once you've connected a bank, you can import historical transactions from your old app if you want continuity.

The math on switching to free

YNAB
$109/yr
→ $0 with LazeeFish
Rocket Money
$144/yr
→ $0 with LazeeFish
Monarch
$100/yr
→ $0 with LazeeFish

Over five years, switching from YNAB to LazeeFish saves $545. That's a car payment, a month of groceries, or the start of an emergency fund. Use the savings calculator to see what keeping $100/year compounded for 20 years adds up to.
